About Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Reserve

Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Reserve encompasses the rugged eastern peninsula of Madeira Island, Portugal, covering approximately 1,984 acres (8.03 square kilometers). Distinguished by its volcanic and sedimentary rock formations, the reserve features expansive cliffs, sea stacks, caves, and isolated beaches, forming one of Madeira's most scenic and wild coastal areas. Unlike the rest of Madeira’s lush greenery, this peninsula boasts a dry, almost desert-like environment with scarce vegetation adapted to wind and salt spray, including rare endemic plants such as the Madeiran sandwort (Arenaria Madeirensis) and Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans). The reserve is also vital for seabird nesting, providing refuge to species such as Cory’s shearwaters and Bulwer’s petrels. The coastal waters are known for diverse marine life, making it a hotspot for snorkeling and diving. The main attraction is the well-marked, moderately challenging hiking trail that traverses the length of the peninsula, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs of Cabo Girão, and the neighboring Porto Santo Island on clear days. Historically, the area was a strategic lookout point against pirates and invaders, with remnants of old defensive installations still visible. The reserve attracts outdoor enthusiasts who come for hiking, birdwatching, photography, and enjoying the raw, unspoiled natural beauty. Its isolation and unique ecosystem make it a key site for conservation and environmental education within Madeira’s protected areas network.
